Fallen Groundstaff, Empty Stands, Banned Stars — PSL Fans Deserve Much Better

The PSL match was abandoned in Lahore as Fakhar Zaman was handed a two-match ball-tampering ban.

A Pakistan Super League 2026 match between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi was abandoned without a ball being bowled after strong winds and poor ground conditions disrupted play at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday. Visuals from the venue showed groundstaff struggling to manage covers amid gusty winds, with one staff member even being knocked over, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions.

The match was called off after officials deemed the outfield unfit for play due to persistent wet patches and unsafe conditions. Despite efforts by groundstaff to prepare the field, the combination of moisture and high winds made it impossible to proceed. The abandonment added to a series of disruptions that have affected the ongoing season of the Pakistan Super League.

Weather-related interruptions have been a recurring issue in the tournament, raising concerns over scheduling and venue preparedness. The latest incident has drawn attention not only for the washout but also for the dramatic scenes on the field, where strong winds made routine ground operations difficult and, at times, hazardous for staff.

The disrupted fixture comes amid other controversies surrounding the league. Earlier, Fakhar Zaman of Lahore Qalandars was handed a two-match suspension for a ball-tampering offence. The decision followed an incident during a match against Karachi Kings, where umpires ruled that the condition of the ball had been deliberately altered.

According to match officials, the ball was handled by multiple players during a discussion late in the game, prompting inspection and eventual replacement. The umpires also awarded penalty runs to Karachi, which significantly altered the outcome of the match. Despite denying wrongdoing, Fakhar received a Level 3 sanction, the most severe under the code of conduct, issued by match referee Roshan Mahanama.

As the tournament progresses, organisers face increasing scrutiny over both on-field controversies and external disruptions. The abandoned match and recent disciplinary issues have underscored the challenges confronting the league, with stakeholders hoping for smoother conduct in the remaining fixtures of the season.
