England Begin World Cup 2025 Campaign with Massive 10-Wicket Win

England spinners dismantled South Africa for 69 before openers sealed a huge 10-wicket win.

England's spinners delivered a masterclass on Friday, bundling out South Africa for a meager 69 and paving the way for a comprehensive 10-wicket victory in their opening match of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium. Led by left-arm spinner Linsey Smith's exceptional 3 for 7, the defending champions restricted South Africa to their second-lowest total in World Cup history, setting up an effortless chase completed in just 14.1 overs.

Openers Amy Jones (40 not out) and Tammy Beaumont (21 not out) sealed the win without losing a wicket, underscoring England's dominance in the tournament's early stages. This result not only boosts England's net run rate but also sends a strong message to rivals in a competition featuring 10 teams vying for the title over the next month in India.

South Africa's innings unraveled quickly after England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt opted to bowl first on a pitch offering grip and turn. Smith struck early, dismissing captain Laura Wolvaardt with a return catch in the second over, followed by Tazmin Brits and veteran Marizanne Kapp in quick succession. Sophie Ecclestone (2 for 19) and Charlie Dean (2 for 14) complemented Smith's efforts, exploiting the conditions to reduce South Africa to 19 for 4 inside six overs.

Sciver-Brunt herself chipped in with 2 for 5, removing Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk to snuff out any hopes of a recovery. Only wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta (22) reached double figures, preventing South Africa from slumping to their all-time World Cup low of 51. The innings lasted just 27.1 overs, highlighting the Proteas' struggles against spin on subcontinental tracks.

In contrast, England's chase was a formality, with Jones and Beaumont navigating early swing from Kapp and the seamers without alarm. Jones, promoted to open, played fluently, striking boundaries to accelerate the pursuit, while Beaumont provided solid support. The pair's unbroken 70-run stand ensured no drama, wrapping up the target with 215 balls to spare. This clinical performance reflects England's preparation, blending experience with emerging talent, as they aim to defend the crown they won in 2022 against Australia in Christchurch.

The match underscores the evolving dynamics of women's cricket, where spin has become a potent weapon, especially in Asian conditions. South Africa, semifinalists in the previous edition, now face an uphill battle to advance from Group A, which includes strong sides like Australia and India. For England, this emphatic start builds momentum ahead of tougher tests, reinforcing their status as favorites in a tournament expanded to include more matches and emphasizing gender parity in the sport.
