Duleep Trophy: South Zone Falter Early On Day 2, Trailing North Zone By 128

South Zone will resume their first innings from 40 for 2 on the second day of their Duleep Trophy 2026-27 semi-final against North Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2, with the side still trailing by a substantial 155 runs. Narayan Jagadeesan remains unbeaten on 34, while South Zone captain Tilak Varma is yet to open his account, as the two look to steady the innings and begin the process of closing the gap on North Zone's first-innings total. The match is being played over four days, running from August 30 to September 2, with the winner advancing to the tournament final.

North Zone were bowled out for 195 on the opening day after being put in to bat, with Karnataka pacer Vidwath Kaverappa the standout performer for South Zone. He finished with figures of 4 for 66, consistently troubling the North Zone batting order and giving South Zone the early advantage in the contest. He was well supported by Kerala's MD Nidheesh, who claimed 2 for 36, and spinner Tanay Thyagarajan, who returned 2 for 31. Kavuri Saiteja and Shreyas Gopal also picked up a wicket apiece, rounding out an attack that dominated proceedings on day one, with seamers accounting for the majority of the wickets that fell.

Opener Qamran Iqbal was the standout batter for North Zone and the only player to offer prolonged resistance, batting through long periods of the innings for a determined 76 off 182 balls that included ten fours and a six. His innings anchored North Zone through a difficult period, but he found only intermittent support, with Kanhaiya Wadhawan's 35 the next best contribution. Once Iqbal fell, the rest of the North Zone line-up struggled to build meaningful partnerships against a disciplined and well-rounded South Zone attack, which ultimately dismissed the side in 59.1 overs to close out the innings comfortably inside the opening day's play.

In reply, South Zone's innings began under similarly challenging conditions, with the side losing two wickets inside the first 18 overs of their reply. North Zone's Anshul Kamboj and Gurnoor Brar each picked up a wicket in the phase, ensuring the contest remained competitive even as South Zone looked to establish an early foothold with the bat. Jagadeesan has since anchored the innings through to stumps, ending the day unbeaten and well placed to continue building a substantial score on the second morning. With an experienced middle order, including Varma, still to come, South Zone will be aiming to erase the deficit before pushing for a first-innings lead of their own as the match progresses into its second day.

The two teams enter the semi-final under contrasting circumstances. South Zone earned a direct entry into the last four by virtue of having contested the previous Duleep Trophy final held in the zonal format, while North Zone advanced after a comprehensive quarter-final win over West Zone, a match in which they posted totals of 251 and 222 in their two innings to seal a 52-run victory. North Zone will also be missing frontline fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana for parts of this tournament cycle, with both having earlier been part of India's national squad commitments, though replacements including Punjab's Gurnoor Brar have since strengthened their bowling resources for the knockout stage.

The winner of this semi-final will progress to the Duleep Trophy final, where they will face the winner of the concurrent last-four fixture between defending champions Central Zone and East Zone, also being staged in Bengaluru. That match, too, entered its second day on Sunday, with Central Zone posting a competitive first-innings total built around contributions from several of their established batters, setting up what is expected to be a closely fought race to the title decider later this week.
