Cricket At 2028 Olympics: Ticket Pricing, Demand Trends And T20 Format Details

Cricket returns to Olympics as LA28 ticket demand surges

Cricket’s return to the 2028 Summer Olympics is generating massive global buzz, with early ticket demand surging and pricing becoming a major talking point as fans prepare for the sport’s historic comeback after more than a century. Interest in tickets has been exceptionally high, with over five million fans registering for the initial lottery phase worldwide, reflecting strong global demand even two years ahead of the Games.

Early sales have followed a lottery-based system, where selected buyers receive limited time windows to purchase tickets, creating urgency and competition among fans. Reports indicate that high-demand events across the Olympics are already seeing steep pricing and quick sell-outs, suggesting cricket—given its massive following in countries like India—could face similar or higher demand.

Ticket pricing for LA28 has a wide range. Organisers have promised entry-level tickets starting at $28 (around ₹2,300), with nearly a third of all tickets expected to cost under $100. However, real-world sales show that prices for popular events can run into hundreds or even thousands of dollars, especially for finals and premium seating. For cricket specifically, estimates suggest $50–$150 for early matches and potentially $300–$1,000+ for medal games, depending on demand and seating tiers. Additional service fees—reported to be around 20–25%—could further increase the final cost for spectators.

Cricket’s Olympic return itself is historic. The sport will be played at a dedicated venue in Pomona and marks its first appearance since the 1900 Games. The tournament will feature men’s and women’s competitions in the Twenty20 (T20) format, chosen for its fast-paced, television-friendly nature and global appeal. Each competition will include six teams, with group-stage matches leading into bronze and gold medal playoffs.

The choice of T20 is strategic. Unlike Test or ODI formats, T20 matches are typically completed within three hours, making them ideal for Olympic scheduling and new audiences. The format also aligns with the International Cricket Council’s push to expand the sport globally, particularly in non-traditional markets like the United States. With limited teams, a compact schedule, and enormous fan bases in South Asia, the UK, and Australia, cricket is expected to be one of the most sought-after tickets at LA28. If early trends are any indication, securing seats—especially for knockout matches—could be highly competitive and significantly more expensive than the advertised base prices.
