Chawla Admits Even India's Best Players Will Feel Butterflies in Championship Final

Chawla urges Indians to embrace pressure and express themselves freely in finals.

Former Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla has said that managing emotions will be crucial for the Indian team as they prepare to face the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India will be playing an ICC tournament final at the venue for the second time in three years, and the occasion is expected to bring both excitement and pressure for the players. Chawla noted that the team must stay composed and focused despite the high expectations from fans.

Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated clash, Chawla emphasized that handling the mental pressure of a final is often as important as skill and performance on the field. He said players must control their emotions and focus on expressing themselves during the game. According to Chawla, the atmosphere surrounding a major final, especially when a team is considered the favourite, can create additional pressure that players need to manage carefully.

“You just have to go out there, control your emotions and express yourself. Because it’s very important when there are so many people around and so many think that you’re going to win the game,” Chawla said in an interaction with broadcaster JioStar. He added that being labelled as favourites also brings a certain level of expectation and responsibility, which can weigh on players if they allow the pressure to affect their mindset.

India’s previous ICC final at the Ahmedabad venue came during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where the team suffered a narrow defeat to the Australian national cricket team. The loss remains a painful memory for many fans, and the upcoming final presents an opportunity for India to create a different outcome on the same ground. The high-stakes match is expected to draw significant attention from cricket followers across the country.

The opposition this time, New Zealand, has historically proven to be a challenging rival for India in ICC knockout matches. Over the years, the Black Caps have often emerged as a difficult team to overcome during crucial tournament stages, making the final an intriguing contest between two strong sides with contrasting styles of play.

As the final approaches, the focus for India will likely remain on maintaining composure and executing their plans effectively on the field. With thousands of spectators expected at the Narendra Modi Stadium and millions watching worldwide, the match promises to be a defining moment in the tournament as both teams aim to secure the prestigious ICC title.
