Chakravarthy Says Bowling in Powerplays Isn’t Benefiting Spinners in Asia Cup

India spinner explains wickets offer more help later in game, prioritising wicket-taking.

Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy revealed that the hard ball and restrictive field settings during Powerplay overs make it challenging for spinners to extract turn at the Asia Cup 2025, with conditions favoring them more in the back-10 overs. Speaking after India’s 41-run victory over Bangladesh in the Super Four stage on Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu mystery spinner highlighted how a softer ball and spread-out fields later in the game enhance spin bowling effectiveness.

Chakravarthy, who has claimed four wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 5.85, noted that the hard ball during the initial overs skids more, offering little purchase from the pitch. “If you’re bowling in the Powerplay or right after, there’s not much help from the wicket. But as the game progresses and the field spreads out, it’s getting better,” he said. Despite his tidy figures, dropped catches have cost him additional wickets, a recurring issue in the tournament.

Emphasizing an aggressive approach, Chakravarthy explained that containment is not viable in Powerplays, where his focus is on taking wickets. “It’s about looking for that one ball that pitches in the right spot, turns a bit, and can take an edge,” he said, underscoring his role as an attacking bowler even if it risks conceding runs. Against Bangladesh, he found the older ball more effective, providing grip and turn as the match progressed, aligning with India’s strategy to stifle opponents in the middle and death overs.

India’s win, powered by Abhishek Sharma’s 75 and a disciplined bowling effort, secured their place in the Asia Cup final. Chakravarthy’s insights reflect the evolving dynamics of T20 cricket, where spinners must adapt to pitch conditions and game phases. As India prepare for the final, his ability to exploit deteriorating balls could prove crucial against either Pakistan or Bangladesh.
