Centurion Justin Greaves Ruled Out of 2nd ODI Against India With Calf Injury

He injured his right calf during his century in Thiruvananthapuram.

West Indies opener Justin Greaves has been ruled out of the second ODI against India after sustaining a calf injury during his century in the opening match of the three-game series. Greaves was one of the key contributors for the visitors in the first ODI, scoring a hundred and helping West Indies make a strong start with the bat. Despite experiencing discomfort during his innings, the opener continued to bat and completed his century before eventually being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav.

Greaves opened the innings alongside John Campbell and the pair put India under pressure during the early stages of the match. The two batters added 135 runs in the first 20 overs, providing West Indies with a strong platform. Greaves took on India's fast bowlers and played several confident strokes, with his cover drives standing out during his 108-ball stay. His innings helped the visitors build momentum before India's bowlers managed to fight back later in the innings.

The injury became apparent during the first 10 overs of the West Indies innings, when Greaves pulled his right calf and required treatment from the team physiotherapist. The batter continued despite the problem and managed to maintain his concentration long enough to reach three figures. Cricket West Indies subsequently confirmed that Greaves had been ruled out of the second ODI because of the injury he sustained during his innings in the opening match.

Greaves' century was eventually brought to an end by Kuldeep Yadav, who played a major role in India's recovery with the ball. Kuldeep finished with figures of 4/40 as India restricted West Indies to 295 for seven after the visitors had made a strong start. The hot and humid conditions in Kerala also made the contest physically demanding, with Greaves having to manage his calf problem while continuing his innings.

India responded strongly during the chase, with Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli combining for a 151-run partnership. Gill provided stability at the top of the order while Kohli played an aggressive innings as India moved steadily towards the target. The hosts eventually completed the chase in 41.4 overs, securing a victory in the opening game and taking an early advantage in the three-match ODI series.

The second ODI is scheduled to be played in Guwahati on September 30, with West Indies now preparing for the match without Greaves. His absence means the visitors will have to make a change to their opening combination after he played a significant role in setting up their innings in the first game. India, meanwhile, will enter the second match having already secured a win in the series opener and will look to build on the momentum from their successful chase.
