Board Of Control For Cricket In India Announces Changes To National Player Selection Protocols

BCCI alters selection policy following criticism.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a significant change to its player selection policy following recent criticism over the board's handling of injured or fitness-doubtful players in the national team. The move comes after BCCI announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan on Tuesday, with the selections carrying explicit conditions attached. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana all had an asterisk placed next to their names, signalling that the board is not entirely certain of their fitness heading into the series.

According to a report, the BCCI is now seeking near-total certainty about a player's fitness before finalising selection, with officials describing the internal benchmark as being "200 percent" confident rather than simply satisfied. The shift follows a string of recent instances in which players including Rana, Bumrah, Sundar and Reddy were named in squads despite carrying injuries or unresolved fitness concerns, only to be withdrawn shortly before or during matches. Those episodes drew scrutiny of the functioning of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), the body responsible for assessing player fitness ahead of selection.

VVS Laxman, who heads the Centre of Excellence, said the selection process is being made more transparent with respect to players' fitness reports. Under the revised approach, a player who is not fully fit at the time of selection but is expected to recover within a short window can still be included in the squad under a fitness condition, provided selectors already have a designated replacement identified in case the player fails to clear a fitness test closer to the match.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia further explained that squads for international series are typically announced three to four weeks in advance, meaning a player who is not fully fit at the time of selection may still have roughly 21 to 28 days to recover before the series begins. This timeline, he said, is why certain players are named in squads with fitness riders attached rather than being excluded outright from consideration.

Ahead of the Afghanistan series, Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy are expected to be fit in time for the series opener in Delhi on September 13, while the fitness status of Harshit Rana and Washington Sundar remains less clear at this stage. All four players are set to undergo fitness assessments closer to the matches, with the board prepared to bring in replacements for any player who fails to clear the tests. As a result, attention in the buildup to the series is expected to extend beyond team performance to the individual fitness outcomes of these four players.
