Ben Stokes to Meet Advisor Wednesday as Retirement and Sacking Fears Grow
Ben Stokes meets advisor Wednesday to decide his England cricket future.
England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to hold crucial discussions with his advisors as speculation over his international future continues to grow following an ongoing investigation into an alleged off-field incident. Reports suggest the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is giving the veteran all-rounder time and space to consider his next move amid concerns that he could potentially retire from international cricket.
The controversy stems from an incident that reportedly occurred after the first Test against New Zealand. According to reports, Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated by the ECB and the Cricket Regulator for allegedly breaching team protocols and becoming involved in a confrontation with Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa at a nightclub. The incident reportedly resulted in an England security officer sustaining injuries that required medical treatment.
The matter has once again raised questions about team discipline and player conduct within the England setup. Cricket authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident before determining whether disciplinary measures are necessary. Potential sanctions could include fines, suspensions, or other penalties depending on the findings of the investigation.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the ECB is reportedly cautious about handling the matter in a way that could accelerate any retirement plans Stokes may be considering. An emergency board meeting is understood to have taken place on Tuesday, with officials reportedly concerned that the England captain could make an unexpected announcement regarding his future if tensions between him and the board continue to escalate.
Stokes is expected to meet former England batter and long-time advisor Neil Fairbrother before making a final decision. The discussions are likely to focus on several options, including continuing as England captain, stepping down from the leadership role while remaining available for selection, or taking an extended break from international cricket. The 35-year-old is currently contracted with the ECB through 2027, covering the next Ashes cycle.
While retirement remains only one of several possibilities, uncertainty continues to surround England's leadership ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, scheduled to begin at The Oval on June 17. Reports indicate that Stokes regrets aspects of the incident and accepts responsibility for his role, although he is also said to be dissatisfied with parts of the ECB's handling of the situation. The board is expected to announce the squad for the upcoming Test later this week regardless of any decision he ultimately makes.
