Ben Duckett: I Skipped IPL Millions to Prove How Much England Means to Me

Duckett skips IPL riches to reclaim his England Test spot after Ashes failure.

England Cricketer Ben Duckett has expressed his determination to reaffirm his commitment to international cricket after a disappointing Ashes campaign and his recent withdrawal from the Indian Premier League. The opening batsman stated that representing England remains his top priority, even as he opted out of a lucrative IPL contract to focus on domestic cricket and improve his chances of national selection ahead of the upcoming Test season.

Duckett’s decision comes in the aftermath of England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, a series that was widely criticised for poor preparation and off-field distractions. The 31-year-old endured a difficult run with the bat, averaging just over 20 and failing to register a significant score. His struggles were further highlighted by a controversial incident during a mid-series break in Noosa, where he was filmed appearing intoxicated, drawing scrutiny over player discipline and professionalism.

Reflecting on the tour, Duckett acknowledged his shortcomings and admitted he was not proud of his performance or conduct. He emphasised the importance of learning from the experience and expressed hope that his future efforts would demonstrate his dedication to the national team. His remarks align with a broader push within the England camp to rebuild focus and discipline following the setbacks in Australia.

Under head coach Brendon McCullum, England have indicated a willingness to adapt and address issues that emerged during the Ashes. Despite the heavy defeat, McCullum has retained his role, with the management backing a long-term approach to improve results. Duckett echoed this sentiment, stating that the team is aware of areas that require improvement and is committed to tightening standards both on and off the field.

By choosing to play for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship instead of participating in the IPL, Duckett has signalled his intent to prioritise red-ball cricket and regain form. He admitted uncertainty about his place in the squad for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s in June but stressed that he would use the coming weeks to prepare intensively and return in peak condition.

Duckett also addressed the criticism surrounding his off-field behaviour, suggesting that the reaction may have been amplified due to the team’s poor performance. He pointed out that similar incidents might have been overlooked if results had been different. Nevertheless, he accepted responsibility for his actions, stating that as a professional athlete, he must maintain higher standards and avoid situations that could negatively impact both his image and the team.
