BCCI to Review Rohit Sharma's Future, Injuries Before New Zealand Tour

The future of Rohit Sharma, injury-management concerns and India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup are expected to be among the key issues discussed at a BCCI review meeting in Mumbai. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and Centre of Excellence head VVS Laxman are expected to attend the meeting. The discussions are likely to focus on player availability, rehabilitation timelines and the team's planning for upcoming international assignments.

Rohit's future in ODI cricket is expected to receive particular attention as India begins planning for the next World Cup. Retirement speculation surrounding the former captain intensified during India's recent tour of England, but he appeared to put those questions aside after scoring a century at Lord's. Despite that performance, his place in India's long-term ODI plans is not considered certain, and the review meeting could provide greater clarity about the selectors' thinking. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are also expected to figure in discussions about the team's veteran players.

Injury management is another major concern, particularly with India's upcoming all-format tour of New Zealand and other important assignments on the calendar. The BCCI is expected to seek clearer information from the Centre of Excellence regarding players undergoing rehabilitation in Bengaluru. Jasprit Bumrah's availability, along with the fitness of Hardik Pandya, could be especially important for strategic planning. Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the IPL and is considered a key option for the 50-over format, but the team is understood to want him fully capable of bowling 10 overs before considering him for ODI selection.

Several other players are also being monitored through the Centre of Excellence's Return To Play programme. Pacer Akash Deep has spent an extended period at the facility and remains under assessment ahead of India's upcoming commitments. Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana were included in the T20I squad for the Afghanistan series subject to fitness. Their rehabilitation will require them to complete match simulations before being cleared to return, making accurate communication between the medical, sports-science and selection teams particularly important.

The review is also expected to examine concerns surrounding the process used to provide injury timelines and fitness updates. While exact return dates can be difficult to predict because injuries and recovery periods vary between players, selectors and team management require reasonable estimates for planning major tours and tournaments. Hardik has reportedly shifted his base to Bengaluru to continue training, highlighting the importance of close coordination with the Centre of Excellence. The management will need to balance player recovery with the demands of India's schedule while avoiding premature returns.

Agarkar's future as chairman of selectors could also feature prominently in the meeting. His current contract is due to end in October, but his participation in the review has raised expectations that the BCCI may consider continuity through the 2027 ODI World Cup. Maintaining coordination between Agarkar, Gambhir and Laxman will be important as India prepares its squad and manages veteran players and injury-prone key members. The meeting is therefore expected to focus not only on immediate concerns but also on building a clear selection and fitness roadmap for the World Cup cycle.
