BCCI Patience Ends: Shreyas Iyer Set to Replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I Captain
The BCCI is set to replace World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer; the selection committee cites poor form and injury.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a major leadership change in the national T20I setup, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the frontrunner to replace Suryakumar Yadav as captain. According to reports, the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar has become increasingly concerned over Suryakumar’s recent batting struggles despite India’s success under his leadership in the shortest format.
The reported move comes shortly after India’s triumph at the T20 World Cup 2026, where Suryakumar captained the side to the title. However, selectors are believed to be planning a transition as the team enters a new cycle ahead of future ICC tournaments. Reports suggest that the BCCI wants to inject fresh energy into the squad and leadership group, with Shreyas Iyer now being seriously considered for both a comeback and the captaincy role.
Suryakumar’s recent performances with the bat are said to have played a major role in the discussions. The Mumbai Indians batter has endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign so far, managing only 195 runs in 10 matches. Reports also claim that the player has been dealing with a persistent wrist problem, which has affected both his batting rhythm and overall consistency in recent months.

Despite the criticism surrounding his individual form, Suryakumar has enjoyed a strong record as India’s T20I captain. Since taking over leadership duties following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, he has reportedly not lost a single T20I series. His tactical approach and calm leadership were widely praised during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has impressed with both his batting and captaincy in IPL 2026. Leading Punjab Kings, he guided the franchise to six wins in their opening seven matches while also scoring 333 runs in nine innings. His performances have reportedly strengthened his case for a return to India’s T20I side after being out of the format since December 2023.
According to reports, the proposed leadership change could take effect from India’s post-IPL 2026 tours of Ireland and England unless selectors alter their plans at the final stage. Questions also remain over whether Suryakumar will retain his place in the T20I squad purely as a batter if the captaincy change is confirmed. The BCCI has not yet made any official announcement regarding the matter.
