BCCI Naman Awards Graphic Shows Gill as Champions Trophy Captain, Rohit Sharma Fans Furious

BCCI awards telecast wrongly credited Gill as 2025 Champions Trophy winning captain.

The BCCI Naman Awards took place on Sunday to honour the outstanding performances of Indian cricketers during the 2024–2025 season. Several current stars and former legends of Indian cricket were recognised for their achievements and contributions to the sport. However, a small error during the broadcast created controversy and upset many fans.

During the ceremony, when Shubman Gill appeared on screen, the on-screen graphics mistakenly described him as the “Winning captain, Champions Trophy 2025.” This error quickly caught the attention of viewers because the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was actually won under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. India had defeated New Zealand national cricket team in the final to win the tournament.

The mistake led to strong reactions from Rohit Sharma’s fans on social media. Many users criticised the organisers and asked them not to “rewrite history,” pointing out that Rohit Sharma was the captain who led India to the Champions Trophy victory. Screenshots and clips of the moment quickly went viral online, sparking debate among cricket fans.

Despite the controversy, the awards ceremony celebrated several major achievements. Shubman Gill and Smriti Mandhana were named the Best International Cricketers in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Gill received the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for the second time in his career after a remarkable year with the bat.

Several legends of Indian cricket were also honoured for their lifetime contributions to the game. Roger Binny, Rahul Dravid, and Mithali Raj received the Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honour given by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The ceremony also celebrated India’s multiple ICC trophy wins during the year, highlighting a successful period for Indian cricket.
