BCCI Confirms: Shreyas Iyer Stable After Rib and Spleen Injury, Out of ICU in Sydney
Shreyas Iyer moved out of ICU after a near-fatal rib injury; doctors say his health remains delicate.
Indian ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit at a Sydney hospital following a severe rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia, where he took a spectacular running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. The impact caused a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding, leading to a sudden collapse in the dressing room with critically low vital signs. Swift intervention by the BCCI medical team, including team doctor Dr Rizwan Khan, ensured immediate hospitalisation, averting what sources described as a potentially fatal outcome.
Scans confirmed the spleen injury, and Iyer is now reported as medically stable but under close observation for infection risks, with an expected hospital stay of around seven days. The BCCI stated that he is “recovering well” and will remain in Sydney under the care of the Indian team doctor, in coordination with local and Indian specialists. A Cricbuzz report noted that while his health “remains delicate but stable”, he is out of immediate danger.
Iyer has been supported by local friends in Sydney, and a family member is set to join him once visa formalities from Mumbai are completed, delayed slightly over the weekend. The injury occurred as Iyer ran backwards from backward point, landing awkwardly after securing the catch off Harshit Rana’s bowling.

The incident has raised concerns about player safety during high-intensity fielding efforts, particularly in the rib and abdominal region. As Iyer continues recovery, the Indian team management remains focused on his day-to-day progress, with no timeline yet for his return to cricket. The BCCI has emphasised a cautious, specialist-led approach to ensure full rehabilitation before resuming competitive play.
