BCCI Asked to Plan Triangular ODI Series as Kohli, Rohit Focus Solely on 50-Over Cricket
Irfan Pathan suggests longer ODI series to keep Kohli and Rohit match-ready for the 2027 World Cup.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to schedule more One-Day International (ODI) matches, including longer bilateral series and multi-nation tournaments, to keep veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma match-fit ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. With both batting stalwarts having retired from Test and T20I cricket, their continued presence in the 50-over format has significantly revived interest in ODIs among fans and experts alike. Pathan emphasized that the duo's unmatched aura and consistent performances are largely responsible for the renewed excitement around the format.
Speaking on Star Sports, Pathan highlighted the need for extended series and innovative events to maximize their exposure. “That’s why I am repeatedly saying one thing. Why can’t we have five ODIs instead of three? Why can’t we have a triangular or quadrangular series? Why can’t we arrange that, because these two greats play only one format?” he said. He further noted, “It won’t be wrong to say that if a lot of interest has returned to ODI cricket, these two have brought it.” Pathan believes such arrangements would not only benefit Kohli and Rohit but also help the Indian team maintain its edge in the 50-over format leading up to the next World Cup.
Pathan also advised the two former India captains to stay active by participating in domestic cricket during periods when there are no international assignments. “The biggest thing is that they are also performing. The World Cup is far away. You will definitely want to think about it, but I am also thinking that the more we get to see them… the more they play, the better it is,” he remarked. Both players recently featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, with Kohli playing two matches for Delhi and expressing interest in another outing, likely on January 6, while Rohit is set to lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11.

Kohli and Rohit’s decision to focus solely on ODIs has created a unique situation where their availability in the format has become a major draw for fans and broadcasters. The BCCI is yet to respond officially to Pathan’s suggestions, but the idea of triangular or quadrangular series could add variety to India’s ODI calendar while providing Kohli and Rohit with regular competitive match practice. As the 2027 World Cup approaches, the focus on keeping the two stalwarts in peak form is expected to remain a key priority for Indian cricket selectors and administrators.
The debate around Kohli and Rohit’s ODI future continues to generate strong interest, with many fans and experts echoing Pathan’s view that extending their involvement in the format could be a win-win for both the players and Indian cricket. With domestic and international schedules aligning in the coming months, the coming period will be crucial in determining how long these two modern-day legends continue to grace the 50-over arena.
