BCB Opens Doors for Shakib Al Hasan’s Return to National Team

BCB reinstates Shakib Al Hasan in central contract, signaling possible return to national team selection.

Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder and former captain Shakib Al Hasan has been handed a potential pathway back to international cricket after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) decided to reinstate him in its central contract list, signaling a possible return following the controversy surrounding the T20 World Cup.

The decision, taken by the BCB on Saturday, offers Shakib renewed hope of bringing his long international career to a close at his home ground. Shakib, one of Bangladesh’s most accomplished cricketers, had earlier been removed from the central contracts list in the aftermath of political developments in the country, including the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He is also a former Member of Parliament from the Awami League.

BCB officials clarified that the reinstatement reflects a fresh evaluation of Shakib’s status as a player. Addressing a press conference, board representatives said the door remains open for the all-rounder and that he would be considered for national team selection if he is available and fit to play.

The announcement comes amid wider turbulence in Bangladesh cricket. It coincided with reports of the International Cricket Council (ICC) removing Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup 2026, following the team’s refusal to travel to India for the tournament. The development has intensified scrutiny on cricket administration and player availability in the country.

Shakib’s absence from the national setup and the central contract list had raised questions about whether the 37-year-old would get an opportunity to end his career on his own terms. His reinstatement is being viewed as a significant step toward restoring that possibility, though no timeline for his return to competitive cricket has been announced.

While no official confirmation has been given regarding Shakib’s immediate selection, the BCB’s move has reopened discussions around his role in Bangladesh cricket. Any final decision, officials said, will depend on fitness, form, and team requirements in the coming months.
