Australia Win Toss, Opt to Bowl First Against India in 2nd ODI at Adelaide

Australia elect to bowl in 2nd ODI; India unchanged, Carey and Bartlett return for visitors.

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second One Day International (ODI) of the series at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday. The match, part of a three-game ODI series between the two cricketing powerhouses, follows Australia's 66-run victory in the rain-shortened opener in Brisbane on Sunday. With conditions favouring the team bowling first under overcast skies, Marsh's decision sets the stage for a crucial encounter as India aims to level the series.

India fielded an unchanged XI from the first ODI, banking on the form of their top-order batsmen and pace attack. Shubman Gill leads the side, supported by opener Rohit Sharma, batting stalwart Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, all-rounder Axar Patel, wicketkeeper KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj. The team's continuity reflects confidence in their strategy despite the opening defeat, where they struggled in the chase after a promising start.

Australia, meanwhile, made two strategic changes to bolster their lineup. Alex Carey replaced Josh Philippe as wicketkeeper-batsman, bringing experience and reliability behind the stumps, while fast bowler Xavier Bartlett came in for Nathan Ellis to add variety to the pace battery. The full Australian XI comprises Marsh (captain), Travis Head, Matthew Short, Matthew Renshaw, Carey, Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Owen, Bartlett, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, and Josh Hazlewood. These adjustments aim to maintain momentum from their dominant first-match performance, where Starc and Hazlewood starred with the ball.

The series holds high stakes for both teams ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. India, under new captain Gill, seeks redemption after their recent Test series whitewash Down Under, while Australia looks to build on their white-ball resurgence. With a sellout crowd expected at the iconic Adelaide Oval and live broadcasts reaching millions worldwide, the toss outcome underscores Australia's aggressive approach. Play is underway, with all eyes on whether India's batsmen can post a competitive total on a pitch expected to assist swing early before settling for strokeplay.
