Australia Win Toss and Elect to Field Against West Indies In T20 World Cup Semi

West Indies make a solid start after Australia won the toss and elected to field in the first semi-final.

Australia captain Sophie Molineux won the toss and elected to field first against West Indies in the opening semi-final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday. The decision came on what appeared to be a good batting surface, with Australia aiming to exploit any early assistance for the bowlers before chasing under the lights. The winner of the contest will secure a place in the tournament final.

Speaking after the toss, Molineux said Australia preferred to bowl first as the pitch looked favourable for batting later in the evening. She added that her side hoped to apply pressure on the West Indies from the outset by making early breakthroughs. West Indies captain Hayley Matthews said her team would also have chosen to field first but remained confident about setting a competitive total, adding that her players intended to play fearless cricket with nothing to lose.

West Indies made a positive start despite being asked to bat first. At the end of three overs, the Caribbean side had reached 25 without loss, scoring at a healthy run rate of 8.33. Captain Hayley Matthews led the charge with an aggressive 20 off 12 deliveries, while Qiana Joseph provided support with 4 not out from six balls as the opening pair looked to build a solid foundation.

Australia's bowlers searched for an early breakthrough but found the West Indies openers in attacking mood. Kim Garth generated movement with the new ball and regularly troubled Matthews outside the off stump, although the West Indies skipper also found the boundary with a fortunate edge. Sophie Molineux and Lucy Hamilton kept things tight from the opposite end, but the opening wicket continued to elude the Australians during the early exchanges.

The first semi-final has brought together two sides with contrasting campaigns. Australia entered the knockout stage as one of the tournament favourites, relying on its experienced bowling attack and balanced batting unit. West Indies, meanwhile, have impressed with their fearless approach and explosive batting, led by Matthews, whose all-round performances have been instrumental in their progress to the last four.

As the match progresses, Australia will aim to restrict West Indies to a manageable total before beginning their chase, while the Caribbean side will look to capitalise on its strong start and post a challenging score. With a place in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 final at stake, both teams will be eager to produce their best cricket in one of the tournament's most important matches.
