Australia Rests Cummins, Starc, Hazlewood for Pakistan ODIs; Workload Management Ahead of 2027 World Cup
Australia rests pace trio for Pakistan tour; 2027 World Cup focus.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that senior fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood have been rested for the upcoming white-ball tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh as part of Cricket Australia’s long-term workload management strategy. The decision comes amid concerns over the heavy international calendar, with Australia expected to play as many as 21 Test matches within a year across multiple major assignments.
McDonald clarified that the move was taken by Cricket Australia to ensure the trio remains physically fit and available for key tournaments in the coming years, including the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite recent injury concerns surrounding some of the pacers, the Australian coach said all three remain fully committed to leading the national team’s campaign in future ICC events. Their absence from the Pakistan and Bangladesh series is therefore being viewed as a precautionary measure rather than a sign of long-term fitness issues.
Australia’s pace attack has been central to the team’s success across formats over the past decade, with Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood forming one of the most experienced fast-bowling units in world cricket. However, the increasing volume of international cricket, franchise tournaments, and ICC competitions has forced cricket boards to adopt stricter player rotation policies. Cricket Australia has particularly focused on managing the workload of fast bowlers to reduce the risk of injuries ahead of crucial Test series and global tournaments.

The white-ball tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh are expected to provide opportunities for younger bowlers and bench players to strengthen their claims for regular selection. Australia has increasingly used bilateral series to test squad depth and prepare backup options for major events. While the absence of the star pace trio may affect the experience level of the squad, team management appears determined to prioritise long-term player fitness and maintain a strong core for future international campaigns.
