Ashwin Questions Arshdeep Singh’s Exclusion, Criticizes Gambhir’s Spin-Heavy Strategy
Ashwin slams India’s decision to bench Arshdeep Singh and warns against over-reliance on spinners.
Mumbai, India – Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin expressed surprise over pacer Arshdeep Singh’s exclusion from India’s playing XI during their Asia Cup 2025 match against the UAE. The team opted for three spinners—Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel—prompting widespread discussion. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin noted that head coach Gautam Gambhir has consistently favoured spin-heavy lineups since taking charge, a trend evident in the recent Champions Trophy and likely to continue until the 2026 T20 World Cup in India.
Ashwin highlighted Gambhir’s preference for batting depth but questioned the decision to include an extra batter against a weaker opponent like the UAE, with all-rounder Shivam Dube serving as the fifth bowler. “If I were Arshdeep, I’d be really disappointed,” Ashwin said, emphasising the pacer’s stellar performances, including his key role in India’s recent T20 World Cup victory and his brief stint as the world’s No. 1 T20 bowler. He argued that Arshdeep’s exclusion seemed harsh given his consistent form.
The veteran spinner suggested that Gambhir’s strategy mirrors his successful tenure with the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he relied heavily on spinners. However, Ashwin cautioned against an overly spin-heavy approach for the upcoming T20 World Cup, particularly under India’s night conditions. “You definitely need an extra fast bowler,” he urged, warning that the current combination might not suit all scenarios.

The debate over team composition comes as India prepares for high-stakes matches, including a clash against Pakistan. With the T20 World Cup on home soil next year, Ashwin’s comments underscore the need for a balanced bowling attack to maximise India’s chances.
