Ashish Nehra Is The Perfect Choice For India's T20 Coach: Sanjay Manjrekar
Former batter highlights Nehra's proven leadership credentials.
Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has identified Ashish Nehra as his preferred candidate to take charge of India's T20 side if the national team ever requires a new head coach. While current coach Gautam Gambhir continues to enjoy success with the Indian team, Manjrekar believes Nehra's track record in franchise cricket makes him a strong contender for a future leadership role.
India have emerged as a dominant force in white-ball cricket under Gambhir's guidance. The team currently holds major international titles, including the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy, and is widely considered among the favourites for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite the stability within the coaching setup, discussions about potential future candidates continue to attract attention, particularly when it comes to the shortest format of the game.
Speaking to Sportstar, Manjrekar praised Nehra's practical and straightforward approach to coaching. He described the former fast bowler as a "street-smart cricketer" with a sharp understanding of the game and an ability to identify and solve problems without unnecessary complications. According to Manjrekar, Nehra's strength lies in his cricketing instincts, clear thinking, and ability to remain focused on performance rather than external influences.

Nehra's coaching credentials have been strengthened by his impressive tenure with the Gujarat Titans. Since the franchise entered the Indian Premier League in 2022, the Titans have established themselves as one of the competition's most consistent teams. Under Nehra's leadership, Gujarat won the IPL title in their debut season, reached multiple finals, and regularly featured in the playoff stages, making them one of the league's most successful modern franchises.
Manjrekar also highlighted Nehra's humility and calm temperament, noting that the former pacer does not seek excessive credit for success and remains committed to the fundamentals of coaching. He suggested that players respond positively to Nehra's honest and uncomplicated style, qualities that are often considered essential in managing elite international teams and maintaining a healthy dressing-room environment.
While there is currently no indication of a coaching change in the Indian setup, Manjrekar believes Nehra would be a natural choice if a vacancy were to arise in the future. He argued that Nehra's achievements as a head coach demonstrate his ability to manage teams under different captains and conditions. As a result, Manjrekar feels that Nehra should be considered for a full head coach role rather than a specialist position such as bowling coach, should the opportunity ever present itself.
