Arshdeep Singh Penalised for Aggressive Ball Throw at Mitchell In T20 Final
Arshdeep accepted the sanction without a formal hearing after the Ahmedabad final.
India pacer Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for throwing the ball aggressively at New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell during the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup held in Ahmedabad. The disciplinary action was confirmed by the International Cricket Council on Tuesday following an on-field incident during the high-profile title clash between India and New Zealand.
The ICC also added one demerit point to Arshdeep Singh’s disciplinary record for breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The regulation relates to throwing a ball or any other item of cricket equipment at or near a player in an inappropriate or potentially dangerous manner during an international match. According to the ICC, the pacer’s action was deemed to fall under a Level 1 offence.
The incident occurred during the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings in the final played at the Narendra Modi Stadium. While fielding the ball in his follow-through, Arshdeep Singh threw it sharply toward the stumps, and it struck the pads of Daryl Mitchell, who was batting at the time. Although the moment did not lead to a major on-field confrontation, match officials later reviewed the action and deemed it inappropriate.

Arshdeep Singh accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft from the ICC Elite Panel, which meant a formal disciplinary hearing was not required. The charge against the Indian pacer was brought by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with third umpire Allahuddien Paleker and fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.
Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code of Conduct typically carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can extend to a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points. In this case, the ICC imposed a 15 per cent fine and one demerit point, marking Arshdeep Singh’s first offence within a 24-month period.
Despite the incident, India produced a dominant performance in the final, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs to win the tournament. The victory allowed India to become the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles and also the first side to successfully defend the championship while winning the tournament on home soil.
