Anil Kumble Warns 'India Faces High Stakes in T20 World Cup Final'
Kumble warns India’s T20 WC final pressure rises with Chakaravarthy struggling, leaving key overs to Bumrah.
Former India spinner Anil Kumble has highlighted potential concerns for the Indian team ahead of their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final against New Zealand on Sunday, particularly regarding the pressure on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah following Varun Chakaravarthy’s dip in form.
Chakaravarthy, who was India’s top-ranked T20I bowler and a standout performer in the group stage, claimed nine wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 5.2. However, his form has slumped since the Super Eight phase, yielding just four wickets in as many games and posting an economy rate of 11.6, raising concerns ahead of the high-stakes final.
“Yes, it is a bit of a concern for India because he's been their go-to bowler, he's been their wicket-taking bowler in the middle overs. Obviously, starts putting extra pressure on Jasprit Bumrah,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo, adding that opposition teams now focus primarily on Bumrah, increasing the challenge for the Indian captain to manage resources effectively.

Chakaravarthy struggled in the semi-final against England at the Wankhede Stadium, ending with figures of 1-64—his most expensive T20I performance and among the costliest in tournament history. Notably, eight of his 11 most expensive T20I spells have occurred since December 2025, signaling a worrying trend for India’s bowling unit.
India has historically struggled against New Zealand in T20 World Cups, having never beaten them in the tournament. Adding to the challenge, Ahmedabad’s recent record in ICC events has been less favorable for the Men in Blue, setting the stage for a tense encounter at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
With New Zealand still seeking their first T20 World Cup title, the final promises an intense showdown. Analysts say the form of key bowlers like Chakaravarthy, alongside the performance of leaders such as Bumrah, could prove decisive in deciding the champion. Fans in Ahmedabad and around the world are gearing up for what promises to be a memorable cricketing spectacle.
