Anil Kumble Reviews India's Performance After Disappointing England Results
Kumble questions India's performance after England defeats.
Former India Captain and Head Coach Anil Kumble has criticised the Indian cricket team and management following their disappointing performances in the ongoing T20I series against England, describing the team's batting collapse as an "abject surrender". Kumble expressed disappointment with the manner in which the reigning T20 World Cup champions struggled under pressure, particularly during the third T20I where India were bowled out for 76 runs while chasing a target of 202. The defeat left India trailing in the five-match series and needing victories in the remaining games to avoid a series loss.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Kumble said he did not expect a world champion side to collapse in such a manner against England. He criticised the approach of India's batters, stating that they failed to show the patience and composure required while facing England's pace attack. According to the former spinner, players attempted aggressive strokes instead of absorbing early pressure, which resulted in a major batting collapse. He said that although the required run rate was high, at least one batter needed to take responsibility and stay at the crease for a longer period.
Kumble also questioned the tactical decisions made by the team management during the match, particularly the decision to send Harshit Rana ahead of Shivam Dube in the batting order. He argued that T20 cricket requires a team's best batters to take responsibility in crucial situations and questioned the logic behind promoting a lower-order player ahead of an established batter. According to him, such decisions can put additional pressure on the batting lineup and reduce the team's chances of recovering from difficult situations.

The former India spinner also raised concerns over frequent changes in the bowling combination, saying that constant alterations prevent players from developing confidence and consistency. He pointed to the example of Prasidh Krishna being dropped after one poor performance against Ireland, while Prince Yadav, who impressed with three wickets in the second T20I, could not help India secure victory. Kumble said the team management needs to provide greater stability to bowlers and allow them enough opportunities to settle into their roles.
Kumble, who represented India in 132 Tests and 271 ODIs and claimed 956 wickets across the two formats, advised the team to maintain a balanced approach between aggression and responsibility in T20 cricket. He emphasised that while batters play a crucial role in scoring runs, bowlers often determine the outcome of matches. With the series against England still ongoing, his comments have intensified discussions around India's team selection, tactics, and approach ahead of the remaining fixtures.
