Akash Chopra Shuts Down ICC-BCCI Bias Claims Over T20 World Cup Super 8 Format

Chopra explained that geography and Pakistan's travel restrictions made the current Super 8 grouping unavoidable.

Allegations that the International Cricket Council structured the T20 World Cup Super 8 groups to favour the Board of Control for Cricket in India have drawn a sharp rebuttal from former India opener Aakash Chopra, who dismissed the claims as baseless. The grouping has sparked debate because all group-stage toppers — India, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe — have been placed in the same Super 8 pool.

Critics argued that the format could eliminate stronger teams early while offering an easier path to sides that finished second in the first round. However, Chopra said the structure was driven by logistical necessities rather than favouritism. The tournament is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, which imposes scheduling constraints.

Explaining the situation, Chopra noted that India must play its matches at home, while Sri Lanka and Pakistan are scheduled to play their fixtures in Sri Lanka. Because Pakistan will not travel to India for matches, organisers had to separate certain teams during group formation. He argued that these practical factors made the current grouping unavoidable.

Chopra also rejected the notion that India gained any competitive edge, pointing out that strong sides like South Africa and the West Indies are in the same group. He added that unexpected results — such as Zimbabwe topping its group — further weaken the conspiracy theory. Urging critics to “do some research", he said social media speculation was misplaced.

The former opener reminded fans that similar Super 8 structures have existed in past editions, including the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2012, when group toppers were also clustered together. According to him, the current format is not unprecedented and should not be viewed through a lens of bias.
