Ajit Agarkar Retained as Chief Selector; BCCI Backs Proven Leader for 2027 World Cup Push

The BCCI extends Ajit Agarkar's contract until June 2027 ahead of the ODI World Cup campaign.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to extend the tenure of chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with a view toward maintaining continuity ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, according to reports. Agarkar’s current contract is due to expire in June 2026, but the board is expected to offer him a one-year extension until June 2027.

The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to ensure stability in team selection and long-term planning, particularly with a major global tournament on the horizon. Officials believe that continuity in leadership within the selection committee will help the team maintain consistency and build a strong squad for the 2027 World Cup.

During Agarkar’s tenure, the Indian team has experienced notable success across formats, including victories in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. India also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, reflecting a period of strong performance and consistent results.

A senior BCCI official was quoted as saying that under Agarkar’s leadership, the team has undergone a “seamless transition” while also showing a willingness to make bold and forward-looking decisions. This approach has reportedly been appreciated by the board, which sees value in retaining his services during a crucial phase.

The extension is also expected to support coordination between the selection panel and team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players such as Suryakumar Yadav. Maintaining alignment among key stakeholders is considered essential for long-term success in international cricket.

According to reports, discussions regarding the extension may take place informally during ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 matches, where BCCI officials are expected to meet Agarkar. The decision, if finalised, would underline the board’s confidence in his leadership as India prepares for upcoming global challenges.
