Adam Lewis Confident SCG Pitch Colour is Perfect Ahead of Ashes Test

SCG curator Adam Lewis reassures that the pitch color is ready for the Ashes 5th Test after MCG scrutiny.

Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) curator Adam Lewis expressed confidence in the condition and color of the pitch ahead of the fifth and final Ashes Test between Australia and England, starting January 4, 2026. The comments come amid heightened scrutiny following the controversial fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which ended in just two days with England securing a four-wicket victory. The International Cricket Council (ICC) subsequently rated the MCG pitch as unsatisfactory, prompting questions about preparation standards for the series finale at the SCG.

Lewis, who has overseen the SCG wicket for several years, emphasized that he remains focused on delivering a balanced surface suitable for a full five-day contest. “I don’t scroll, I don’t have social media, so I try and keep all that noise away,” he told reporters, indicating that external criticism and speculation do not influence his approach. He pointed out that the SCG traditionally produces wickets that offer pace, bounce, and some assistance for spinners as the match progresses, characteristics that have made it one of the most respected venues in Test cricket.

The MCG's rapid finish in the fourth Test, where England chased down a target of 184 in just 37.4 overs on the second day, raised concerns about pitch preparation and over-preparation for seam movement. The ICC's unsatisfactory rating has intensified discussions about maintaining consistency across venues during the Ashes. Lewis assured that the SCG pitch is being carefully prepared to support a competitive and extended game, with no intention of replicating the MCG's outcome.

As both teams prepare for the series decider—Australia leading 3-1 and aiming to retain the urn, while England seeks a consolation win—the pitch at the SCG will once again be under close observation. Curator Adam Lewis's confidence in the wicket's color and condition reflects a commitment to providing a fair contest, allowing batters and bowlers equal opportunities over five days. The outcome of the Sydney Test will likely depend on how the surface evolves throughout the match, with players and fans alike hoping for a memorable conclusion to the 2025-26 Ashes series.
