Yuvraj's Father Yograj Singh Says "Wives are Why Cricketers Retire" in Shocking Remark
Yograj Singh's viral sexist remark blaming wives for cricketer retirements sparks widespread outrage online.
Former Cricketer Yograj Singh has sparked a major controversy after making remarks widely criticised as sexist, claiming that “wives” are a key reason behind cricketers deciding to retire. His comments have triggered strong reactions across social media and the cricketing community.
Yograj, who is also the father of Yuvraj Singh, said that family influence—particularly from wives—often pushes players to step away from the game. He suggested that athletes could continue playing longer if they remained focused solely on their careers, arguing that age should not be a limiting factor in professional cricket.
Doubling down on his stance, Yograj stated that women should not “come in between” an athlete and his career, a remark that has been widely condemned. He further linked retirement decisions to family responsibilities, claiming that players are often advised to prioritise children and household life over their sporting ambitions.

His comments have drawn criticism for reinforcing gender stereotypes and undermining the role of family support systems in an athlete’s career. Many users online pointed out that decisions around retirement are complex and influenced by factors such as fitness, performance, mental health, and personal priorities—not merely external pressure.
Yograj also dismissed age-related concerns in cricket, calling the “age factor” in India "funny". He backed senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying they should continue playing as long as they perform, regardless of age. According to him, consistent performance should be the only criterion for selection.
Praising MS Dhoni, Yograj said the former India captain could continue playing in the Indian Premier League for another decade due to his fitness and discipline. He argued that no one has the authority to tell a player like Dhoni when to retire.
The remarks have once again placed Yograj in the spotlight for his outspoken views, with many calling for greater sensitivity and accountability from public figures when addressing issues related to gender and professional choices.
