Ajinkya Rahane Points to Frequent XI Changes as Reason for India's Recent ODI Struggles
Ajinkya Rahane criticises frequent changes under Gambhir after 5 ODI losses in 9.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under sharp scrutiny following the team’s 1–2 ODI series defeat to New Zealand, with former India batter Ajinkya Rahane openly questioning the team management’s approach. The loss marked India’s first-ever home ODI series defeat to New Zealand and added to growing concerns over consistency and planning under the current coaching setup.
India had begun the series strongly by taking a 1–0 lead but failed to capitalise on the momentum. The decisive third ODI in Indore proved particularly disappointing, as India fell 41 runs short while chasing a stiff target of 338. Virat Kohli’s valiant century of 124 runs went in vain as the rest of the batting order failed to provide adequate support.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Rahane highlighted India’s recent record, noting that the team has lost five of its last nine ODIs. He attributed these setbacks largely to frequent changes in the playing XI, arguing that constant chopping and changing has prevented players from settling into defined roles. According to Rahane, such instability makes it difficult for players to perform with confidence.

Rahane stressed that with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, clarity and security from the team management are essential. He said players need to know whether they are being backed for the long term, adding that a clear vision from the coaching staff is crucial for building a settled and successful unit. He also pointed out that expectations were high against a relatively inexperienced New Zealand side, making the series defeat even more disappointing for fans.
The series loss against New Zealand was India’s third ODI series defeat under Gambhir, following earlier setbacks against Sri Lanka and Australia. The results have intensified debate among fans and experts, particularly given India’s strong home record and depth of talent. Rahane acknowledged New Zealand’s impressive performance but maintained that India must focus on correcting its own processes.
With India’s next ODI assignment at least six months away, Rahane believes the break offers a valuable opportunity for introspection. He advised the management to identify and back a core group of players during this period, ensuring stability and long-term planning as India prepares for future challenges in the 50-over format.
