PM Modi Becomes India's Longest-Serving PM, Reflects on 12 Years With Sanskrit Verse

PM Modi marks 12 years in office, surpassing Nehru's continuous tenure record.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked 12 consecutive years in office on Wednesday, reflecting on his governance philosophy after surpassing the 4,399-day mark as India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister. The milestone also places him ahead of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who held office uninterrupted until his death in May 1964.

In a post on X, PM Modi cited a Sanskrit verse from the Subhashitam, emphasising that public service is the highest measure of good governance. He wrote that true leadership is defined by humility, dedication and a continuous commitment to duty, which ultimately earns the trust of citizens.

The Sanskrit verse shared by the Prime Minister highlighted ideals of selfless service, public welfare, and disciplined governance, underlining his recurring emphasis on India’s civilisational and cultural heritage in political communication.

The message was accompanied by a visual representation of the verse in a traditional manuscript-style design, reinforcing the symbolic tone of the post as he completed his 12th year in office. Modi, who first took office in 2014, has since led the Bharatiya Janata Party to three consecutive general election victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024, each time securing a parliamentary majority.

The milestone was marked by messages of congratulations from several world leaders and public figures. Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Disanayaka described it as a reflection of the trust placed in India’s democratic leadership, while US Senator John Cornyn praised Modi’s tenure, crediting it with significant poverty reduction and transformational governance.

BJP units across the country also observed the occasion with public events and banners celebrating the Prime Minister’s 12 years in office.
