Mumbai Commuters Battle Delays and Overcrowding Amid Heavy Rain Chaos

Heavy rain causes waterlogging at Dadar, minor local train delays.

Heavy rainfall across Mumbai on Thursday morning caused slight waterlogging on railway tracks at Dadar station, raising concerns among commuters about disruptions to suburban train services during the peak rush hour. Visuals recorded around 8.30 am showed water accumulating on sections of the tracks as intense showers continued across several parts of the city. Despite the conditions, railway authorities said local train operations remained largely functional, although some passengers reported minor delays.

The Western Railway stated that suburban services on the Churchgate–Dahanu Road corridor, as well as Harbour Line services between Mahim and Goregaon, were operating normally. The Central Railway also said trains were running on the CSMT-Kalyan, Karjat, Kasara and Khopoli main lines, along with Harbour Line services between CSMT and Panvel/Goregaon and Trans-Harbour Line services connecting Thane, Vashi and Panvel. However, several commuters claimed that some local trains were running 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule, leading to overcrowding at stations during the morning commute.

Heavy rain since the early hours of Thursday led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Mumbai, including Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Charkop, Worli, Goregaon and Andheri. Civic authorities continued monitoring vulnerable locations as rainfall intensified across the city. Emergency teams remained on alert to respond to flooding, traffic disruptions and any weather-related incidents that could affect public transport and essential services.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Mumbai and its suburbs, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers later on Thursday night and into Friday morning. The weather department has also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph, advising residents to exercise caution while travelling and avoid waterlogged areas wherever possible.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said a high tide of 4.27 metres was expected at 1.45 pm on Thursday, followed by another high tide of 3.71 metres at 1.31 am on Friday. A low tide of 1.82 metres was forecast for 7.49 pm on Thursday. Officials have been closely monitoring tidal conditions as high tides combined with intense rainfall can slow the drainage of rainwater and increase the risk of urban flooding.

According to BMC data, the eastern suburbs recorded the highest average rainfall of 189 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8 am on Thursday, followed by 172 mm in the island city and 165 mm in the western suburbs. Among the highest rainfall readings were Santacruz SWM Workshop and the S Ward Office in Bhandup with 238.8 mm each, followed by Paspoli Municipal School in Powai, Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli, Mithagar Municipal School in Mulund, Andheri Fire Station, the F South Ward Office in Parel and the G South Ward Office in Prabhadevi, highlighting the widespread impact of the monsoon across Mumbai.
