Jharkhand Villagers Block Roads After Four Killed in Elephant Attacks in Single Day

Four killed in elephant attacks in Jharkhand's Ramgarh in one day; residents protest against administration negligence.

Ramgarh in Jharkhand was thrown into panic on Wednesday after four people were killed in separate elephant attacks within 24 hours, sparking protests across the district. Villagers took to the streets at Number Four Chowk in Ghato, raising slogans against the Forest Department and district administration, accusing them of negligence.

The road blockade disrupted traffic on the Ramgarh–Kedla main road and nearby routes, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. Locals said the fatalities occurred between Tuesday evening and late night in the Ghato police station area. The victims have been identified as Amit Rajwar, 33; Amul Mahto, 35; Parvati Devi, 40; and Savitri Devi, 45.

The first attack happened around 4 p.m. near the Ara Number Four Feeder Breaker in West Bokaro when a herd of elephants, resting by the roadside, was disturbed by villagers trying to chase them away. Rajwar, returning home from work, was trampled to death, triggering panic and a halt in traffic as heavy vehicle drivers fled the scene.

A few hours later, Mahto, a resident of Giddi, was killed in another attack, and the situation escalated late at night when Parvati Devi and Savitri Devi were trampled by the herd. The repeated incidents left residents terrified and forced many to stay indoors overnight.

Protesters demanded immediate measures to prevent such incidents, including confining elephants to forest areas, strengthening early-warning systems, and providing timely and adequate compensation to the victims’ families. Villagers criticized authorities for failing to implement long-term strategies to protect human settlements from wild animals.

The deadly sequence of events has raised serious questions about wildlife management and safety measures in Jharkhand, prompting calls for urgent government intervention to prevent further tragedies in the region.
