Indian Scientist in Israel ‘Locked in Shelter’ Amid Missile Attacks: ‘It's Exhausting’

An Indian scientist recounts life in a bomb shelter during missile strikes.

Suchismita Muduli Baron, an Indian scientist living in Beersheba, Israel, was forced to seek refuge in a bomb shelter with her family on Saturday as missile salvos from Iran targeted Israeli cities. The attacks followed coordinated US-Israel airstrikes on Iran, escalating tensions across the Middle East and prompting widespread alerts. Millions of residents, including foreign nationals, have taken shelter amid the ongoing hostilities.

Baron shared her experiences from the shelter on social media, providing rare glimpses of life underground during the missile strikes. She described the situation as "exhausting", highlighting the strain of remaining confined while uncertainty loomed over the region. Her posts have resonated with other expatriates and local citizens facing similar circumstances.

The scientist emphasized the psychological toll of living under constant threat, noting that even brief moments outside the shelter required caution and vigilance. Daily routines, including work and essential activities, have been severely disrupted as residents adapt to heightened security measures and curfews imposed by Israeli authorities.

The attacks were triggered after US and Israeli forces carried out Operation Epic Fury against multiple Iranian cities, citing stalled nuclear negotiations and intelligence of Iran resuming nuclear and missile programmes. Iran retaliated with extensive missile and drone strikes across Gulf countries and Israel, escalating fears of a wider regional conflict.

Local authorities in Israel have urged citizens to follow safety protocols and remain in shelters when alerts sound. Emergency services continue to monitor missile trajectories, coordinate medical assistance, and maintain communications with communities across affected regions. Foreign nationals, including Indians, are being advised to stay in contact with their respective embassies and consulates.

Baron’s account underscores the human impact of geopolitical conflict, highlighting the uncertainty and fear faced by civilians in affected areas. As the situation develops, residents in Israel and surrounding regions continue to hope for a rapid de-escalation while navigating the challenges of living under the shadow of missile attacks.
