Gitanjali Angmo Praises 'The Odyssey', Urges Bollywood to Explore Indian Epics

Activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has said Bollywood should rediscover the power of epic storytelling after watching Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. In a post on X, she reflected on the film's themes and argued that Indian cinema has a wealth of mythological and historical stories that deserve to be brought to the screen with greater ambition and depth.

Sharing a throwback photograph with Nolan from an accidental meeting in New York in 2024, Angmo wrote that watching The Odyssey felt surreal because the film had once been just a conversation. She said the story's themes of the hero's journey, dharma, destiny, exile, temptation and homecoming closely resonate with the Indian imagination, making it especially meaningful for audiences familiar with such narratives.

She added that India possesses a "treasure house" of epics and suggested filmmakers should adapt them with scale, sensitivity and intellectual depth. According to Angmo, cinema is more than entertainment, describing it as a medium that shapes minds. She concluded that Bollywood should reclaim its role as "one of our most powerful classrooms."

Her remarks come days after veteran actor Kamal Haasan also praised The Odyssey. Calling it a film that "belongs to the ages," Haasan urged audiences to watch it and revealed that his special ode to the film will be shown in Indian theatres. He also noted that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had already previewed and approved the film.

The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, marking the filmmaker's first large-scale mythological feature. The film follows Odysseus' long journey home after the Trojan War and was shot entirely using IMAX's largest film format across multiple international locations. Produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas for Universal Pictures, the ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway and Lupita Nyong'o.
