C P Radhakrishnan Sworn In As 15th Vice President Of India

President Droupadi Murmu administers the oath; the ceremony is attended by top leaders and dignitaries.

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India on Friday in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to the 67-year-old, who took the pledge in English, dressed in a red kurta, invoking the name of God. The event marked a significant milestone in Radhakrishnan’s long political career, which includes roles as a BJP leader, former governor of Maharashtra and Jharkhand, and two-time Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore.

Radhakrishnan secured the vice-presidential post after defeating opposition candidate B. Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes in an election held on Tuesday. The election was triggered by the sudden resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, due to health concerns. Dhankhar, making his first public appearance since stepping down, attended the ceremony, joined by prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP president J.P. Nadda.

The swearing-in was also graced by former vice presidents Hamid Ansari and Venkaiah Naidu, underscoring the event’s significance. Radhakrishnan, a long-time RSS member since his teenage years, is expected to bring his extensive administrative and political experience to his new role as Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a position critical to India’s legislative process.

His election follows a period of political prominence for the BJP, with Radhakrishnan’s victory seen as a reinforcement of the party’s ideological agenda. As he assumes office, all eyes will be on how he navigates the challenges of fostering cooperation in a polarised Rajya Sabha while upholding constitutional values.
