Thousands Of Dead Fish Found In Palghar’s Satpati-Murbe Creek, Probe Underway
Mass fish deaths in Palghar creek raise environmental concerns.
Thousands of dead fish were discovered in the Satpati-Murbe creek in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday, triggering concern among local residents and prompting an environmental investigation. The mass fish mortality was reported in the Satpati Danda Pada village area, where fishermen and villagers first noticed large quantities of dead fish floating near the creek.
According to local accounts, the incident came to light around 3 pm when residents observed species such as chhot boi, pofal, salpa, and other fish washed ashore or floating dead in the water. Fishermen in the area also reported unusually high catches of dead fish, raising alarm about the condition of the water body and its impact on local livelihoods.
Preliminary observations by officials suggest that extreme heat conditions or pollution could be responsible for the large-scale fish deaths. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of contaminated discharge entering the creek, particularly from nearby industrial zones such as the Tarapur Industrial Estate, which has previously been associated with environmental concerns.

A senior official from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Raju Wasave, said that water and fish samples have been collected for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of the incident. He noted that similar cases in the past were linked either to industrial effluents mixing with rainwater runoff or to reduced oxygen levels in water bodies during periods of high temperature.
Environmental experts say such events are often triggered by a combination of factors, including rising water temperatures, low dissolved oxygen levels, and chemical contamination. However, officials have stressed that the exact cause will only be confirmed after detailed scientific analysis of the samples collected from the site.
Further investigation is underway, and authorities are expected to take appropriate action based on the test results. Meanwhile, the incident has raised concerns among fishing communities dependent on the creek for their livelihood, as they await clarity on the environmental impact and potential risks to marine life in the region.
