PM Modi Announces Free Online Coaching For All, AI Training For 1 Crore Youth

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of initiatives focused on education, skilling and employment opportunities for young people during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort in New Delhi on Saturday. Among the major announcements was a plan to provide free online coaching to students preparing for various competitive examinations. PM Modi also announced an artificial intelligence-focused skilling programme under which one crore young people will receive training. The initiatives come at a time when technology, particularly AI, is rapidly changing the nature of jobs and the skills required by employers.

While announcing the free online coaching programme, PM Modi said the cost of coaching had become a significant burden for poor and middle-class families. He said many families are compelled to spend large amounts on coaching because of the growing importance attached to competitive examinations. "Coaching classes burden the poor and the middle class. We will provide free online coaching for various exams," the Prime Minister said. He also referred to the social pressure faced by parents, saying many feel that not sending their children to coaching classes could affect their family's perceived status.

The Prime Minister said the proposed initiative would make use of India's existing digital public infrastructure, teachers and talent to create a network through which students across the country could access coaching online. The move is intended to make preparation for competitive examinations more accessible to students who may not be able to afford private coaching. PM Modi said the initiative could help families save thousands of crores of rupees currently spent on coaching and could also enable parents to remain closer to their children rather than sending them away or relying heavily on coaching centres.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of the growing role of digital education in India's learning ecosystem.
