Kennedy Center Faces Closure Vote As Financial Troubles Collide With Trump Branding Fight

The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted Tuesday to close the Washington venue, amid concerns over its finances and a continuing legal dispute over efforts to add President Donald Trump’s name to the institution. People familiar with the board meeting said Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick participated in the discussions. The decision came hours after a federal judge blocked the board from placing Trump’s name or other memorial references to him on the Kennedy Center building or grounds without congressional approval. The board’s vote calls for the venue to close for renovations, although the timing and implementation of the shutdown remain subject to ongoing legal proceedings.

The closure debate has been closely linked to claims about the Kennedy Center’s financial and physical condition. The Trump-aligned board has argued that the institution requires major repairs and renovation, with the federal government having allocated about $257 million for the work. A board proposal discussed before Tuesday’s meeting described the center as facing serious financial difficulties and raised the possibility of a prolonged shutdown for renovations. The board has also argued that changes to the institution’s branding and recognition of Trump were connected to efforts to secure financial support for the project. Trump has said he would not proceed with the planned renovation unless the legal dispute over his name is resolved in his favour.

The dispute intensified after US District Judge Christopher Cooper issued a ruling Tuesday blocking the board from adding an inscription crediting Trump with renovating or restoring the Kennedy Center. The order also prevented the board from renaming the surrounding grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.” Cooper cited an earlier ruling that found the board could not alter the institution’s memorial designation without congressional action. “Simply put, Defendants cannot install memorials for President Trump or anyone or anything else at the Kennedy Center without Congress’s blessing,” Cooper wrote. He also ordered that the administration provide at least 60 days’ notice before any future attempt to install an inscription or acknowledgement of Trump at the venue.

The Kennedy Center has been at the centre of a broader dispute since Trump returned to the White House and reshaped its board. Trump became chairman after changes to the board, while several of his administration officials and allies were appointed as trustees. The board subsequently pursued plans to recognise Trump on the building and its grounds, prompting a legal challenge from Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio member of the board. Cooper previously ruled in May that the effort to rename the institution after Trump violated federal law, which designates the facility as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The latest ruling represents another legal setback for the board’s naming proposals.

The future of the shutdown remained uncertain following Tuesday’s vote because an earlier court order had restricted the board’s ability to close the institution. Reports said the board was seeking a lengthy closure for a major renovation, while opponents were challenging the proposed shutdown in court. Trump has indicated that the renovation could be halted if the courts prevent the board from recognising him at the venue. The Kennedy Center, established as a national memorial to former President John F. Kennedy, has consequently become the subject of overlapping disputes involving its finances, physical condition, governance, planned renovations and the legal authority to alter its name or memorial designations.
