Nasa Targets Permanent Moon Base With 73 High-Stakes Lunar Missions

Space agency outlines roadmap for sustained human lunar presence

NASA has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, detailing plans for as many as 73 lunar landings in its newly released Moon Base User’s Guide. The document outlines a long-term strategy to construct a sustainable lunar base, marking one of the agency’s most expansive space exploration efforts to date.

Published on April 6, the nine-page guide highlights both the scale of the mission and the significant technological and financial challenges that lie ahead. It identifies critical gaps in infrastructure, logistics, and operational capabilities that must be addressed before humans can live and work on the Moon for extended periods. The roadmap reflects a structured approach aimed at gradually building the foundation for future habitation.

As part of its near-term plans, NASA intends to significantly ramp up lunar activity through a series of robotic and uncrewed missions. Over the next three years alone, the agency is targeting 21 landings designed to prepare the lunar surface for human exploration. These missions are expected to test technologies, deliver equipment, and gather essential data to support future crewed operations.

The broader vision aligns with NASA’s ongoing Artemis programme, which seeks to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustained presence. While the roadmap underscores growing momentum in lunar exploration, it also reflects the complexities involved, including funding constraints, engineering hurdles, and coordination with international and commercial partners.
