IndiGo and Air India Planes Clip Wingtips at Mumbai Airport, Both Aircrafts Grounded

IndiGo and Air India planes' wingtips touched on Mumbai airport taxiway, grounding both aircraft.

A potential aviation mishap was averted at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Tuesday evening when aircraft belonging to Air India and IndiGo made contact on the taxiway. The incident occurred prior to takeoff and after landing, involving the wingtips of both planes. Officials confirmed that all passengers and crew members are safe.

According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, both aircraft were immediately grounded as a precautionary measure and sent back to the bay for detailed technical inspections. A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has reached the site to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess compliance with safety protocols.

The aircraft involved were two Airbus A320s. Officials stated that the Air India aircraft was stationary on the taxiway awaiting departure clearance, while the IndiGo aircraft was taxiing after landing. The two planes were operating on parallel taxiways when their right wingtips brushed against each other.

IndiGo also confirmed that its Hyderabad–Mumbai flight 6E791 was grounded following the incident, which occurred around 7.30 pm. The airline said the aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspections and that all standard procedures were followed, including promptly informing the relevant authorities. The investigation is ongoing.
