GRAP-3 Pollution Restrictions Lifted Across Delhi-NCR

Improving air quality prompts authorities to lift GRAP-3 restrictions in Delhi-NCR, while GRAP-1 and 2 remain.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining areas revoked the stringent restrictions imposed under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Friday, January 2, 2026, following a noticeable improvement in Delhi's air quality. The decision came after the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital dropped from 380 on Thursday to 236 by 4 pm on Friday, showing a consistent downward trend. Stage-III measures, which included a ban on non-essential construction activities, entry of diesel trucks, and closure of certain industries, were lifted with immediate effect across the entire NCR.

The CAQM subcommittee, after reviewing real-time data and meteorological forecasts, concluded that the conditions no longer warranted the continuation of the more severe curbs. However, authorities emphasized that all actions under Stages I and II of the GRAP would remain in force to prevent any reversal in air quality. These lighter measures include restrictions on garbage burning, use of diesel generator sets, and enforcement of dust control at construction sites, along with continued promotion of public transport and anti-smog measures.

Delhi-NCR has been battling severe air pollution since late December, with the AQI frequently entering the 'severe' category (above 400) due to a combination of stubble burning, vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and unfavorable weather conditions such as low wind speed and temperature inversion. The implementation of GRAP stages is a graded emergency response mechanism activated based on AQI thresholds to curb pollution sources progressively. The withdrawal of Stage III is seen as a positive development, though experts caution that sustained efforts are needed to maintain the improvement.

The lifting of Stage-III restrictions brings partial relief to residents, industries, and commuters who faced disruptions, including bans on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles and closure of schools and colleges in some phases. The CAQM has urged citizens to continue using public transport, carpooling, and avoiding open burning to support the ongoing air quality recovery. With meteorological conditions expected to remain variable in the coming days, authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and activate appropriate GRAP stages as required to safeguard public health in the region.
