Yogi Adityanath Appeals For Tree Plantation, River Protection Before World Environment Day
UP Chief Minister urges citizens to conserve water, protect rivers and plant more trees.
Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called upon citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives, emphasising the importance of water preservation, river rejuvenation and large-scale tree plantation. In a message addressed to the people of the state, the Chief Minister urged residents to view environmental protection as a shared responsibility rooted in India’s cultural and spiritual traditions.
Highlighting the connection between Indian heritage and nature, Yogi Adityanath said that the reverence for trees, rivers, mountains and living beings has long been an integral part of Sanatan culture. He noted that ancient Indian scriptures regard nature as sacred and stressed that environmental stewardship should not be limited to symbolic observances. According to the Chief Minister, World Environment Day should serve as an opportunity for citizens to reaffirm their commitment to protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable living.
The Chief Minister also referred to traditional festivals and practices such as Vat Savitri Vrat, Chhath and Maha Kumbh, describing them as examples of the enduring bond between society and the natural world. He said the concept of “Dev Rin” in Indian philosophy underscores humanity’s obligation to preserve forests, water bodies and the environment for future generations. As concerns over climate change, water scarcity and environmental degradation continue to grow, he stressed that conservation efforts have become more critical than ever.

The Chief Minister also highlighted government initiatives aimed at environmental restoration, including the ‘One District, One River’ programme, which seeks to revive and conserve water ecosystems through coordinated efforts between communities and authorities.
Referring to the state’s recent environmental achievements, he noted that Uttar Pradesh now has 12 Ramsar sites following the inclusion of Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary. He described the recognition as a significant milestone in the state’s conservation efforts and an example of how ecological protection can be strengthened through sustained action and public participation.
Calling on young people to lead environmental campaigns, the Chief Minister encouraged them to participate in afforestation drives, cleanliness programmes and water conservation initiatives. He also urged children to plant and nurture at least one sapling on their birthdays or other special occasions.
