Wang Yi Says India-China Relations Should Focus On Partnership, Opportunity Over Threat

China’s Wang Yi calls for India-China partnership, stressing trade, cultural ties, and BRICS collaboration.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Sunday that India and China should view each other as “partners, not rivals” and focus on “opportunity instead of threat,” calling for closer cooperation and mutual trust between the two Asian powers. Wang made the remarks during his annual press conference on the sidelines of the National People’s Congress.

Wang noted that the positive trajectory in bilateral relations stems from meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, particularly the successful summit in Tianjin last August. He highlighted that the improvement builds on a “fresh start” initiated during their Kazan meeting in 2024. According to Wang, renewed interactions at all levels, record bilateral trade, and growing people-to-people exchanges have produced tangible benefits for both countries.

Looking ahead, Wang said both nations must “maintain the correct strategic perception of each other as partner rather than rival” and prioritize development while safeguarding peace and stability in border areas. He stressed the importance of good-neighbourliness, friendship, and cooperation in promoting regional stability.

“Mutual trust and cooperation are beneficial to the development of the two countries, while division and confrontation is detrimental to the rejuvenation of Asia,” Wang added. He also urged India and China to support each other in hosting upcoming BRICS summits, with India slated to host this year and China in 2027. The bloc has expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran alongside its original members.

India-China relations, which had been strained for five years due to the military standoff in eastern Ladakh, began normalizing following the Kazan and Tianjin summits. Both countries have since resumed visa and flight services and initiated a series of measures to strengthen ties and reduce friction along their shared border.

Wang concluded that the path forward should remain guided by the directions set by their leaders, with a commitment to removing interference and focusing on mutual development and regional stability.
