TVK Names Vijay as CM Face for 2026; Party Authorises Him to Decide Alliances
Actor-politician authorised to pick 2026 partners in Mahabalipuram meet.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) crowned its founder Vijay as the official Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections during a special general council meeting held at a private hotel in Mahabalipuram on November 5, 2025. The actor-turned-politician, sporting his signature white shirt and stubble, presided over the session where a unanimous resolution empowered him to decide all electoral alliances. The move solidifies TVK’s aggressive entry into state politics, positioning Vijay as the face to challenge the ruling DMK.
The council adopted 12 resolutions covering pressing issues. These included condemning repeated arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy, demanding enhanced women’s safety measures following the recent Coimbatore sexual assault case, and calling for an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Another resolution sought robust police protection for Vijay and attendees at TVK events, citing the tragic stampede at the party’s Karur rally on September 27 that claimed 41 lives. Members observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victims.
Vijay described the current political climate as “favourable” for TVK, which has already announced it will contest all 234 seats in 2026. The party has been sharply critical of the DMK government on governance, corruption, and public safety. By granting Vijay full authority on alliances, the council has effectively made him the sole strategist for TVK’s electoral roadmap, signalling confidence in his mass appeal across urban and rural voters.

With Vijay now officially the CM face and alliance master, political circles are abuzz over potential tie-ups—or a solo fight—that could reshape Tamil Nadu’s bipolar contest.
