Tharun Mannepalli’s Valiant Run Ends in Macau Open Semifinals

Indian star falls in thrilling Macau clash!

India’s Tharun Mannepalli put up a spirited fight but fell short against Malaysia’s Justin Hoh in a thrilling three-game semifinal at the Macau Open Super 300 badminton tournament on Friday. The 23-year-old, ranked world No. 47, lost 21-19, 16-21, 16-21 in a gripping 81-minute battle, marking the end of an impressive campaign.

Mannepalli started strongly, surging to an 11-6 lead in the first game with precise shots. Despite unforced errors allowing Hoh to close the gap, the Indian regained momentum with a 17-12 advantage, capitalizing on Hoh’s wayward returns. After a tense 18-18 tie, Mannepalli secured the opener with a sharp straight return, converting his second game point.

The second game saw both players struggle with consistency. Mannepalli’s errors, including long shots, handed Hoh an 8-6 lead. Though the Indian fought back to level at 13-13, a series of mistakes—wide shots and missed flanks—allowed Hoh to pull ahead 17-14. The Malaysian seized four game points and clinched the set after another errant shot from Mannepalli.

In the decider, Mannepalli took an early 6-3 lead, but Hoh responded, tying at 9-9. A long shot gave the Malaysian a slight edge at the break. Mannepalli’s game unraveled post-interval, with repeated errors enabling Hoh to surge to 16-9. Despite a brief rally to 13-16, Mannepalli’s wide and long shots handed Hoh four match points. A clever drop shot sealed the victory for the Malaysian, catching the Indian off-guard.

Mannepalli’s journey to the semifinals showcased his potential as a rising star in Indian badminton, having previously defeated higher-ranked opponents in the tournament. While the loss stings, his performance signals a bright future on the global stage.
