Sumit Wins Silver Medal! Indian Greco-Roman Wrestlers Shine at Budapest

Sumit’s Silver Sparks Hope: Indian Greco-Roman Wrestlers Shine at Budapest Ranking Series

India’s Greco-Roman wrestling squad staged a remarkable turnaround on the final day of the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial 2025, the fourth United World Wrestling (UWW) Ranking Series, held in Budapest, Hungary, with young grappler Sumit clinching a silver medal in the 60kg category. The team’s performance, capped by a silver and a bronze, signals a promising resurgence for Indian Greco-Roman wrestling.

Sumit, the reigning Under-23 Asian Champion, delivered a commanding run in the 60kg division. Starting with a bye in the qualification round, he dominated Sadyk Lalaev (UWW) with a 9-3 victory, pinned South Korea’s Dahyun Kim (7-4) in the quarterfinals, and crushed Kazakhstan’s Galym Kabdunassarov 10-1 in the semifinals to secure his first senior international medal. In the final, Sumit faced European and world champion Nihat Mammadli of Azerbaijan, who took the gold with a 5-1 win after a defensive masterclass.

Fellow wrestler Anil Mor added to India’s tally with a bronze in the 55kg category. After a 6-1 loss to Emin Sefershaev (UWW) in his opening bout, Mor capitalized on the repechage rounds, defeating Moldova’s Atrium Deleanu 7-0 and outclassing Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Botirov 7-4 in the bronze-medal match. Mor, who previously won silver at the Yasar Dogu International Tournament in June 2025, showcased resilience and technical prowess.

The two medals contributed to India’s impressive haul of 10 medals at the tournament—three gold, three silver, and four bronze—across men’s freestyle, women’s wrestling, and Greco-Roman categories. The Indian women’s team clinched the team title with 130 points, while Sujeet Kalkal’s gold in the 65kg freestyle marked another highlight.

After a lackluster start where no Greco-Roman wrestlers reached the medal rounds, the final day’s success underscores the growing potential of India’s squad. Sumit’s silver, following his historic gold at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in June 2025, and Mor’s consistent performances signal a turning point for a discipline that has long trailed India’s freestyle wrestling achievements.

With ranking points from Budapest shaping seedings for the upcoming World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, in September, Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers are poised for further breakthroughs.
