India’s 20-member squad eyes World Cup qualification at the Asia Cup in Hangzhou.
The Indian women’s hockey team, under the captaincy of seasoned midfielder Salima Tete, is geared up for the Asia Cup in Hangzhou, China, from September 5 to 14, 2025, with a 20-member squad announced on August 21. The tournament is critical, as the winner earns a direct berth in the 2026 FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.
Drawn in Pool B alongside Japan, Thailand, and Singapore, India will kick off their campaign against Thailand on September 5, followed by Japan on September 6, and Singapore on September 8. Chief Coach Harendra Singh emphasized the team’s intense preparation and balanced composition, aiming to deliver an aggressive yet disciplined performance.
The squad blends youth and experience, with goalkeepers Bansari Solanki and Bichu Devi Kharibam anchoring the defense, supported by stalwarts like Nikki Pradhan and Udita, alongside young talents Manisha Chauhan, Jyoti, Suman Devi Thoudam, and Ishika Chaudhary.
The midfield, a powerhouse of creativity and stability, features Salima Tete, Neha, Lalremsiami, Sharmila Devi, Sunelita Toppo, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke. The forward line, comprising Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari, Mumtaz Khan, Deepika, Beauty Dungdung, and Rutaja Dadaso Pisal, promises dynamic attacking play. Notably, veterans Savita and Sushila Chanu, who featured in the FIH Pro League’s European leg, are absent from this lineup.
Coach Singh highlighted the high stakes, stating that every match will test the team’s composure, fitness, and tactical execution. “We’ve selected a squad that balances experience with young talent, and our focus is on playing with intensity to compete against Asia’s best,” he said. With the team motivated to secure World Cup qualification, expectations are high for India to deliver performances that resonate with national pride. The Asia Cup campaign is poised to showcase India’s growing prowess in women’s hockey on the continental stage.
