Ronaldo pays emotional tribute to late teammate Diogo Jota after win.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo delivered an emotional tribute to his late teammate Diogo Jota after Portugal secured a 2-1 victory over Croatia to qualify for the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Ronaldo, who scored the first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage goal of his career during the match, was visibly emotional after the final whistle as he dedicated the victory to Jota, who died in a car accident last year.

Following the match, Ronaldo changed into a shirt bearing Jota's No. 21 before pointing towards the sky in a heartfelt tribute. The Portugal captain was seen in tears as teammates gathered around him in a moment of solidarity, acknowledging the emotional significance of the occasion. The gesture quickly resonated with football fans around the world and became one of the defining moments of Portugal's victory.

Jota died on July 3, 2025, at the age of 28 in a road accident near Cernadilla, Spain. He was travelling with his younger brother, André Silva, while heading to catch a ferry to the United Kingdom for Liverpool's pre-season preparations after reportedly being advised against flying following recent lung surgery. His death sent shockwaves through the football community and prompted tributes from clubs, players and supporters worldwide.

Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Portugal honoured Jota by symbolically including him in the official tournament squad. Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez said the forward's spirit continued to inspire the team and described him as a guiding presence within the squad. The symbolic inclusion ensured Jota's name remained part of Portugal's World Cup journey and recognised his dream of representing his country on football's biggest stage.

Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said the timing of the victory made the occasion especially emotional for the players. He described the coincidence of the date as unbelievable and said the result meant far more than simply progressing in the tournament. According to the Portugal captain, the team's hard-fought win made the tribute even more meaningful for everyone associated with the squad.

Portugal will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 clash against Spain as they continue their World Cup campaign. While qualification remains the immediate focus on the pitch, Ronaldo's tribute ensured that one of Portugal's most memorable moments of the tournament was dedicated to remembering a former teammate whose legacy continues to inspire the national team.
