Pujara Rates Head-Abhishek as IPL's Most Destructive Opening Pair Ahead of IPL 2026
Pujara calls Head-Abhishek more destructive than IPL's legendary Kohli-Gayle pair.
Veteran Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has praised the explosive opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, calling them one of the most destructive duos in the history of the Indian Premier League. Speaking ahead of the 2026 IPL season, Pujara suggested that the opening partnership of the two Sunrisers Hyderabad batters could even surpass the legendary combination of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle in terms of sheer attacking power.
Pujara highlighted that the batting strength of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2026 season appears particularly formidable, with the side packed with aggressive hitters throughout the lineup. According to the experienced Test batter, the presence of power hitters from the top order to the lower middle order gives the team the capability to post massive totals. He pointed out that the team has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to chase or set targets exceeding 250 runs in recent seasons, a rare achievement in the tournament’s history.
The upcoming IPL campaign will see Sunrisers Hyderabad begin their season against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 28. The opening pair of Head and Abhishek is expected to play a crucial role in setting the tone for the team’s batting strategy. Both players are known for their fearless approach, often attacking bowlers from the very first ball of the innings and putting opposition teams under immediate pressure.

Speaking during a broadcast discussion, Pujara emphasized that the duo’s aggressive style and ability to consistently dominate bowlers make them a particularly dangerous partnership. He noted that their approach of hitting boundaries regularly and maintaining a high scoring rate has made them central to the team’s recent success. While the pairing of Kohli and Gayle for Royal Challengers Bengaluru remains one of the most iconic opening combinations in IPL history, Pujara suggested that Head and Abhishek’s attacking impact could be even more devastating.
However, the former India batter also identified a potential weakness in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s overall performance. He observed that while the team often produces exceptional batting displays in home matches, their performances away from home have been inconsistent. According to Pujara, opposing teams tend to focus on dismissing the top-order power hitters early, which can disrupt the team’s ability to maintain high scoring momentum.
Pujara added that players such as Heinrich Klaasen, Head, and Abhishek form the core of the team’s batting strength. If these key players are dismissed early, the team can struggle to build large totals. Addressing this vulnerability, he said, will be essential if Sunrisers Hyderabad hopes to sustain its aggressive style and remain competitive throughout the IPL 2026 season.
