As Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks his 75th birthday today, his tenure since 2014 stands as a defining chapter in India’s modern history. Leading the world’s largest democracy through three terms, Mr. Modi has reshaped the nation’s economic, social, and diplomatic landscape with a blend of ambition and pragmatism, earning him global acclaim and steadfast domestic support.

Born in 1950 to a modest family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Mr. Modi’s rise from a tea seller to a global statesman embodies the aspirational India he champions. His economic reforms have been sweeping. The 2016 demonetization, though disruptive, catalyzed a digital payment boom, with transactions soaring and tax filings rising 25 percent. The 2017 Goods and Services Tax unified a fragmented tax system, easing business operations. The “Make in India” initiative, launched in 2014, drew foreign investment in defense and railways, helping India become the world’s fifth-largest economy, with annual growth of 5.5 to 6 percent. Digital India extended internet access to rural areas, spurring entrepreneurship, while the Jan Dhan Yojana opened over 500 million bank accounts, empowering the unbanked. In 2025, Mr. Modi’s focus on semiconductors and space signals a bold vision for India’s future.

Social welfare has been a hallmark of Mr. Modi’s governance, guided by his motto “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Together with All, Development for All). Globally, Mr. Modi has elevated India’s stature. His diplomacy strengthened ties with the United States, the Middle East, and Russia, earning honors from nations like Bhutan. India’s 2023 G20 presidency amplified the Global South’s voice, integrating the African Union. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance underscore his commitment to sustainability.

Culturally, Mr. Modi has revived India’s heritage, from the 2020 Ram Temple inauguration to the 2025 Gyan Bharatam Portal, digitizing a crore manuscripts.

With approval ratings above 70 percent, Mr. Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047 endures, cementing his legacy as a transformative force in the books of India's history.
